What do you do after you after spending ten years researching the people, places and events that made-up the history and heritage of a Victorian asylum/hospital, and four years writing a book about it?
Well, if you're me, you go ahead and write, produce and direct a short film about it.
“Going Home” was inspired by a poem written by a volunteer at the Leavesden Hospital about a young patient named Jean who she worked with in the 1970s.
The film looks at the evolution of mental health care and treatment between 1870 to 1970, as told through the true-life stories of patients and doctors who worked and lived in the Leavesden Asylum/Hospital during those times.
It also askes the question, “are we doing any better in 2024”.
